On arrival at Delhi airport, on completion with immigration, custom clearance and luggage collection please proceed to the exit look for our representative in the arrival area- who will be holding a placard with group’s name, met upon and transferred to domestic terminal to board flight to Ahmedabad - also called the “Manchester of the East” with its various heavy textile units. After some brief rest proceed to visit the visit Sabarmati Ashram, situated on the western banks of the Sabarmati River. This ashram, founded in 1918 by Mahatma Gandhi, was the headquarters during the struggle for Indian Independence. After breakfast proceed for a short Heritage walk to the old city. It is a guided walk of two and a half hours, extremely well designed under the guidance and co-operation with local organization and Swaminarayan Trust, operated by a group of young volunteers. This walk gives you an insight on the Ahmedabad, history, culture and present situation. Return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast proceed to visit the Hatheesing Jain temple is one of the best ornate Jain temples in Ahmedabad. This temple was built in the nineteenth century by a rich Jain merchant. This profusely decorated temple is dedicated to 15th Jain tirthankar or Jain Apostle-Dharmnath. Calico Museum of Textiles (subject to prior permission - closed on Wednesdays), which exhibits both antique and modern textiles including rare tapestries, wall hangings and costumes. Also on display are old weaving machines and Mill Owner’s Club by Le Corbusier. After that drive around the town to view some of the architecture of Charles Correa - one of India’s leading architects. Charles Correa was born in Hyderabad, India in 1930. He studied at the University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology after which he established a private practice in Bombay in 1958. Correa's work in India shows a careful development, understanding and adaptation of Modernism to a non-western culture. Later, visit Sidi Saiyed Mosque famous for its beautiful carved stone windows. Also on display are old weaving machines. Rani Rupmati's Mosque - Named after the Hindu wife of Sultan Mohammed Beghara, this mosque was built between 1430 to 1440 A. D. It has three domes supported by pillars with the central dome slightly elevated so as to allow natural light into the mosque. The mosque has richly carved minarets, balcony windows and perforated stone lattices. Its three domes are linked together by a flat roof. However, the mosque and tomb of Rani Sipri at Astodia surpasses it for its planning and structural arrangement. Popularly known as Masjid-e-Nagina, this mosque is the most exquisite gem of Ahmedabad. The bead-makers quarter, where beads are still shaped and drilled using ancient techniques Dada Heri Step Well - One of the most elegant step wells located in the city of Ahmedabad, also known as Dada Hari Vav, quite an exciting place here. This step well is exclusively contrived with an octagonal shape and the internal and underground region of the Dada Hari Vav is made with a complex designing outlook. Early this morning, depart for Balaram, an approx drive of 6 hours, enroute visiting Adalaj step well, located just outside Ahmedabad city limits. The vavs or baolis (step-wells) of Gujarat consist of two parts: a vertical shaft from which water is drawn and the surrounding inclined subterranean passageways, chambers and steps which provide access to the well. The galleries and chambers surrounding these ancient wells were often elaborately carved and became cool, quiet retreats during the hot summers. Step-wells are most certainly one of India's most unique, but little-known, contributions to architecture, and it is uncertain whether they are to be encountered anywhere outside the Indian sub-continent. The 'Vav' (step-well) at Adalaj derives its name from the lady patron, Ruda, wife of the Vaghela chief, Virsingh; who built it in the 15th or 16th century AD. Lunch at local restaurant at Siddhpur. Arrive Balaram and stay at the palace, which was once the weekend retreat and hunting resort of the Lohani ruler. Today explore the Gowala and Garacia tribal villages around Balaram. Balaram is located around the hills bordering Gujarat and Rajasthan. The aborigines, the Gowala and Garacia a re primarily sheep- herders, known for their unique culture and traditions. The Gowala and Garacia tribes are second cousins to each other, differing only in the manner of living. After breakfast you will be driven to Dasada. Enroute visit the 11th century Sun Temple of Modhera. It is easily one of the finest examples of devotional architecture in Western India. Built in 1026AD the temple is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and stands high on a plinth overlooking a deep stone- steeped tank. As in the Sun Temple at Konark, this temple was designed so that the rays of the Sun would fall on the image of Surya (means sun) at the time of the equinoxes. Continue your drive and visit Patan, the former capital of Gujarat and renowned for Patola saris, one of the finest hand-woven textiles in the world. Patola weaving with colored silk threads is done in the double Ikat style that originated in India and is also done in Bali. In an area called Sadvi Wada, you can watch the complex weaving of silk Patola saris. There is only one family left that does this type of weaving. Each sari takes from four to six months to be produced, and is sold for up to Rs. 70, 000 (more than US$ 2,000). Silk threads are dyed in a set pattern before being woven on a complex loom. Utmost care is taken to ensure even tension, throughout the fabric. The warp and weft threads are woven into intricate multi-colored designs. Enjoy a Demonstration of Potala weaving by Salvi family and later lunch with them (subject to confirmation closer to the date of travel). Salvi family, the only family (consisting of 8 / 9 members) in India who does this kind of particular weaving, are also the national award winners from Govt. of India. This morning enjoy a safari into the Little Rann of Kutch. These are the salt flat areas that are home to endangered Asiatic Wild Ass, various wildlife and birds. Later proceed to visit The Rabari and Banjara are the two important tribes of this region who trade in salt. You will be exploring this area and meet these interesting and colorful people. After early breakfast you will be driven to Bhuj. On arrival, proceed to the District Collector's office to obtain the special permit (except for Sundays) required to visit the restricted areas. Visit the richly decorated Swaminarayan Temple - which has been widely featured in travel magazines around the world. It is best known for its mirror and jewel mosaics on marble walls surrounding a jet fountain pleasure pool courtyard and collection of portraits, coins, palanquins and other royal memorabilia. The greatest attraction of Kutch is it’s rich tradition of tribal textiles and handicrafts specially leather embroidery, block printed fabrics, leather footwear, wood carvings, silver works, pottery and metal ware, all of these can be purchased at the bazaars of Bhuj or better still from the villages of the Banni tribes that you will explore today. Visit Nirona village to see the bell making and Rogan Art by Khartri Muslim community, lacer work by Vadha community, Sumraser Village to see scoof emrbodery done by harijan & soda community( also visit Judy Frater’s workshop ), and the Khavada village to see Ajarak Print and painted pottery work done by Muslim Khatri community. Kalo Dungar (Dhinodhar) The Black Hills of Kachchh are a common geographic feature of the district. The low hills and hillocks lend the beauty and mystique to the rann, which has lured the adventurers through ages. Kalo dungar is the tallest hillock in Kachchh with a shrine dedicated to Lord Dattatreya on the top. A fair is held here on the Janmashtami day every year. Visit to the top of the hill which also affords magnificent view of the Rann. Afternoon proceed to visit the oldest palace in Gondal, the 17th-century Naulakha Palace, which has intricate stone carvings with exquisite jharokhas (balconies), a fabulous pillared courtyard, delicately carved arches and a unique spiral staircase. The large chandelier-lit durbar hall has stuffed panthers, gilt wooden furniture and beautiful antique mirrors. The private palace museum has an impressive display of silver caskets which carried messages and gifts for Maharajah Bhagwat Singhji on his silver jubilee as ruler of Gondal, one of the many golden caskets received by him on his 50th anniversary, the weighing scales on which he was measured against silver and gold on the respective anniversaries, and princely relics. Also visit the Royal Garages house, an extensive collection of vintage and classic cars including a 1910 New Engine, a Delage and a Daimler from the 1920s, a 1935 Mercedes, 1935 Packard two-door convertible, 1941 and 1947 Cadillac, 1955 Cadillac limousine, sports cars from the 1950s and 1960s like the Mercedes 300 SL, Jaguar XK 150 and Chevrolet Camaro, numerous imposing American cars of the 1940s and 1950s, a fleet of four-wheel drive vehicles from the World War II and post-war period, and some contemporary sports cars. Most of these cars are restored and some bear the original Gondal state number plates. There are plans to restore a selection from the extensive collection of horse drawn carriages, which includes Victorian showpieces and a Shetland pony carriage. Established with an objective of keeping Gandhian Thought alive, Gandhi smriti is a living monument to Gandhiji. Opened in 1955, the institution houses a Gandhiji Picture Gallery, Khadi Gramodyog Bhandar. A must visit is the Gandhi Smriti, where you can get traditional khadi garments and accessories. Later visit Barton Library & Museum: Built in 19th century, it as a beautiful two Storeyed building, constructed in ashlar stone masonry, with Gothic arch Windows and a sloping roof with Mangalore tiles. It is one of the oldest Libraries of Gujarat and also houses a museum, which exhibits are coins, Guns, weapons, wood carving, farming implements, fossils and archaeological Finds. After breakfast leave for a tour of Palitana. It is worth an effort to climb this 610 meter high hill and visit the famous Shatrunjaya Jain Temple Complex, which has 863 Temples with arches, carved pillars, and bejeweled idols ranging from 11th to 20th century. Lunch at Vijay Villas Palace, Palitana. Later visit Sihor, before Bhavsinghji founded Bhavnagar this was the capital of Gohil Rajputs. Excellent wall paintings depicting Bhavnagar ruler Wakhatsinhji with battle scenes, armies, cavalries, etc. are found in Sihor Darbargadh. Brahma Kund is known for its excellent quality of water. After breakfast our representative will assist you to the airport to board flight to Mumbai. On arrival in Mumbai you will be met upon and transferred to the hotel. Afternoon, proceed for city tour of Mumbai visiting – Gateway of India built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay. Admire the yellow basalt Gateway of India with turrets and intricate latticework with its triumphal arch. This is where King George the V and Queen Mary sailed in. Victoria Terminus consisting of carved stone friezes, stained glass windows and flying buttresses. It is Gothic architecture at its best! Designed by F. W. Stevens, it is considered to be architecturally one of the finest stations in the Indian Centr al Railway. The station was opened to traffic in 1887 and today the headquarters of the Central Railway. Visit the Visit the Mani Bhavan Gandhi Sangrahalaya, a quaint Gujarati-style house where Mahatma Gandhi lived from 1917 to 1934. The three-story home is now a Gandhi Museum that preserves the spirit of the man who put his nation before himself.
